The Library was started soon after New Norcia was established. It now comprises a collection of over 60,000
books as well as an archives with documents, manuscripts, maps, photos, films, videotapes and oral history tapes which have far outgrown the original library rooms in the monastery. While the Museum and Art
Gallery are open to general visitors and scholars may access parts of the Library's collections, the core of the original library within the monastery is only open to the monks and their invited guests. The
Library is close to the heart of New Norcia and its holdings include everything from records of people and past events to guidelines on monastic life.( see "The Rule" ) |
