Jack Moody was born in Durham, England in 1910 and emigrated with his family to Kurri in 1913. He has lived in Cessnock since June 1920. Jack's father, Ralph Moody, worked at Pelaw Main and Aberdare Central. Jack Moody first worked as a delivery driver for William's icecreams in 1923, in 1925 he worked for a short tome at Aberdare Central before taking up stints as a road construction labourer and as a general hand in a travelling circus. When he returned to Cessnock he worked with his father at Millfield-Greta colliery, where he also had a sideline as an S.P. bookmaker, he quit the colliery in 1936 to work as a "bookie" fulltime, eventually becoming a registered bookmaker in 1939, retiring in 1975.
