Ted Hayler was born at Merewether in 1897. He moved to Cessnock in 1910 were his father worked at the Neath Colliery. Ted Hayler also began working at the Neath pit starting as a "powder monkey". In 1919 he worked at Cessnock No.2 (Little Cessnock) also studying at the same time to become a mines surveyor. In 1924 he was appointed under-manager at Neath pit. During WWI, Mr Hayler also saw service in Egypt with the A.I.F. In the interview Mr Hayler provides an insight into the early period of Neath history, and the impact that the mine had on the township.
