return to HAIRTAIL   Trichiurus lepturus, a close relative of the mackerals and tunas with a brilliant silvery,  ribbon-like body that tapers to a slender thread of a tail.  Its prominent barbed fangs make it an effective predator on smaller baitfish.  The hairtail occurs in coastal waters around Australia, reaching depths as great as 500 metres.
