Established in 1970, Latrobe Regional Gallery's permanent collection focuses on contemporary Australian Art after 1971. The gallery holds several works of historical significance to the Latrobe Valley and the Gippsland region, such as Jessie Trail's Ethel Spowers, Evelyne Symes' images of the Yallourn Power Station and Ann Montgomery's Poowong Hills. The gallery's collection comprises works on paper, paintings, ceramics, sculpture and glass. It features important images by Mandy Martin from the 1990 Latrobe Valley series and major works by Peter Booth, Imants Tillers and Helen Geler. Gippsland has a large community of resident sculptors, represented in the Gallery's collection with works by Kevin Mortensen, Clive Murray-White, Adrian Mauriks, Peter Cole, Colin Suggett, Tony Trembath, Glenn D.Clarke, Catherine Larkins and Dan Wollmering. The Latrobe Valley is known as the birthplace of Australian Studio Glass, and the collection features many significant glassworks, notably the Ingrid McGaughy Collection. The gallery has a reputation for innovative exhibitions and conducts an active education program in and for schools and the wider community. When the gallery reopens after its current refurbishment, services will extend to include a public lecture series and guided tours of visiting exhibitions and the permanent collection. A specially designed education kit, Revealing Art, is available to all schools and community groups. It includes poster-style reproductions of key works from the Latrobe Regional Gallery collection and comprehensive teaching materials on contemporary education issues. Artworks are also taken to regional areas where outlying schools can view them and meet the curator.
