Gippsland Art Gallery Sale Address: Admission Charges: Opening Hours: |
At the junction of two major rivers in Gippsland, Sale was an important town for the early shipping trade in the region. Named after an imperial war hero, General Sir Robert Sale, the city is still dotted with historic buildings, a canal and swing bridge that bear the evidence of its prosperity and growth in the 19th Century. The Gippsland Art Gallery Sale is located at the Port of Sale Civic Centre, home to the gallery since 1995. The gallery consists of three major exhibition spaces and features a small but significant permanent collection. All works in the permanent collection are in storage, unless periodically displayed. Individuals or school groups must arrange a booking with Gallery staff to view the storage facilities. The gallery hosts several major touring exhibitions each year. The permanent collection includes paintings and works on paper by artists of the Gippsland region and in particular works which use landscape and the environment as a reference. Recent acquisitions include works by Andrew Browne, Martin King, Cheryl Burgess and a collaborative work by Victor Greenaway and Hendrik Foster. Local craft is also well represented in the collection.
